How business water rates work in the UK

England's non-household water market opened in April 2017 (Scotland followed its own path from 2008). The model is simple: regional wholesalers still deliver your water and take it away, but you choose which retailer bills you and manages your account. Your water comes through the same pipes either way.

Your bill has two parts: wholesale charges, which are fixed by region, and the retailer's margin for billing, meter reading and customer service. That margin is where competition happens — retailers compete on price, but also on consolidated billing for multi-site businesses, water-efficiency audits and leak detection.

Many businesses have never switched and sit on their default retailer's standard rates. Others pay for leaks they cannot see: a continuously running meter overnight is one of the most common — and most expensive — problems we find.

Business water FAQs

Can UK businesses switch water supplier?

Yes — in England the non-household water market has been open since April 2017, and Scotland's market opened in 2008. Eligible businesses can choose their water retailer while the same wholesaler delivers the water through the same pipes.

Will my water supply be interrupted if I switch retailer?

No. Switching only changes who bills you and looks after your account. Your water keeps flowing through the same pipes from the same wholesaler, and the switch is handled behind the scenes.

What do I need to switch business water retailer?

A recent water bill is the quickest route — it shows your supply point ID (SPID), usage and current charges. With that we can compare retailers and arrange the transfer for you.

How much can my business save on water?

It depends on your usage, but savings come from two places: a sharper retail margin from a competing retailer, and our water-efficiency review, which often finds leaks, faulty meters or tariffs that no longer fit how you use water.

What if my business is in Wales or Northern Ireland?

The open retail market covers England and Scotland. In Wales and Northern Ireland most businesses cannot yet switch retailer — but we can still review your bill for tariff errors, leaks and efficiency savings.
